Dušan Kovačević’s Balkan Spy, Directed by Tatjana Mandić Rigonat, Premieres at the “Raša Plaović” Stage

New version of the famous play by Dušan Kovačević, Balkan Spy, premiered on the “Raša Plaović” Stage on 1st October. The production has been directed and dramatized by Tatjana Mandić Rigonat, who placed social paranoia and invention of enemies, as well as taking on the role of a victim, into the focus of the play.
Ljubomir Bandović interprets the character of Ilija Čvorović, a man who lives and acts according to his own principle that tells him that everything is opposite to what it looks like; Nela Mihailović interprets the role of his wife, Danica Čvorović; Dušanka Glid Stojanović interprets the role of his brother Đura, i.e. twin-sister; while Katarina Marković is in the role of Ilija’s daughter, Sonja; Milutin Milošević interprets Petar Jakovljević, a tenant; and Vanja Milačić is in the role of a Radio Announcer.
The film scenes, recorded by Dejan Stojanović and edited by Jelena Tvrdišić, feature Boris Komnenić, Branko Vidaković, Vjera Mujović, Olja Bećković, Aleksandra Kolarov, Dunja Kostić and Nemanja Konstantinović.
The basis for this staging has been the original play, which is less known and differs a lot from the film script for the cult film from 1984.
Themes of the play are social paranoia, mass media propaganda, creation of fear and enemies. Materials used in the production are documentary materials from various Serbian media, and each character represents a paradigm of certain situation, profile, tendency…
The hall was filled to capacity at the premiere and the audience gave cordial applause and standing ovations to the cast of this tragedy – tragedy of the time, a family and everybody involved.
Upon several encores, Željko Hubač, Acting Director of the Drama Company, addressed the audience and said that the performance was dedicated to Predrag Ejdus, principal actor of the Drama Company of the National Theatre in Belgrade.
After the announcement, the audience and the whole cast stood up and gave a long and cordial applause as a symbol of ultimate respect to great Serbian actor who passed away on 28th September.
In this production, Irena Popović Dragović composed the music, Branko Hojnik designed the set, Ivana Vasić designed the costumes and Anđelija Todorović designed the stage movements.
Musicians Vladimir Gurbaj (clarinet), Elio Rigonat (guitar), Ivan Mirković (accordion) and Relja Derbogosijan (drums) also take part in the performance.
